Collection of American Automotive History Headed for Auction in Texas

This October a large selection of American collector cars will be up for auction in Texas just outside of Dallas. Its the Charlie Thomas collection which contains cars dating as far back as 1919, with an exceptionally strong showing from the 50s and 60s. Over 150 cars are being put up for sale without reserve, and with such a broad range there will definitely be a little something for everyone.

One of the big draws from the collection will definitely be the parade of eleven Corvettes destined for sale, ranging from 1954 to 1967. It is clear that Mr. Thomas liked driving his collection as many cars are listed as having earlier restorations, or being in “driver” condition. This 1962 in white on black is a perfect example of one of these drivers showing signs of well cared for wear and tear, but still in fully original condition.

It seems Mr. Thomas also had a bit of an affinity for the classic Chevy Bel Air as well. There are ten examples up for sale and unlike the Corvettes there are a number of colors and bodies to choose from. Bel Air collectors are an interesting breed so it will be interesting to see what some of these cars wind up selling for. Some may opt for the all original, fully restored Bel Air Nomad, while others may gravitate towards the sleek stock-looking black convertible with its modern 300 bhp ZZ3 350 TPI V-8.

The list for this auction goes on for miles and also includes an expected stable of thirteen Mustangs, as well as a number of lesser known collectibles. A 1948 Studebaker Midget open track race car is a pint sized example of a great vintage racer and a great chance to dabble in the vintage racing circuit. A pair of Pierce-Arrow roadsters also listed are expected to fetch some serious coin, usually averaging well in excess of $100k. The only real strangers on the docket are the far less collectible Jeep offerings including a 1989 Jeep Wrangler Islander, and a 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Possibly being held onto for longer term collectability, both Jeeps seem like they have seen a bit of use, and in a room full of folks on the hunt for real collectibles they might end up selling for a bit of a bargain.
